This brings up another GREAT question...

What popular American stores can I find in Egypt?!? (preferably in Sharm...restaurants included)

In Sharm el Sheikh, you can find:

- Claire's Accessories
- Pizza Hut
- Baskin Robin's Ice Cream
- Hard Rock Cafe
- Mcdonald's
- KFC
- Hardee's
- Starbucks

I'll let you know as I think of more. There are stores that may not be named after an American store, but sell brands like Calvin Klein, Guess, and Timberland to name a few.

There are also a few malls around, which is pretty fun. There is the Old Market, where you can shop for more traditional things, and there are lots of shops at Na'ama Bay, as well as a lot of "world" restaurants, like Chinese, Indian, Thai, etc.

I was just looking at a rental ad for an apartment in Sharm...and this is what it says is nearby:

-Burger King
-Peking
-TGIFridays
-Harley Davidson

My husband told me there was a Burger King, but I didn't put it on the list, because I never saw it. I went to the TGI Friday's in El Maadi, but I didn't see the one in Sharm! Peking, I have no idea what that is, and yes, the Harley Davidson company has these sort of festivals where they put the bikes in a big area by the road, which always made me laugh, because the idea of anyone in Egypt needing a Harley Davidson was absurd to me.

They have small motorcycles imported from China, that aren't even allowed to be imported into the US, because they're so unstable. They're not sturdy at all, and people zoom past you on the roads like they don't give a care in the world. Almost all of the car accidents that occur are because of those Chinese motorcycles and toktoks. And when you're going as fast as they do, wrecking is even worse... I've seen families on a single tiny motorcycle going maybe 90 mph, with the dad driving holding a small child between his legs and the mom on the back cradling a baby... a BABY, on a motorcycle. And I've seen people have accidents and it's so horrible. People just get mauled on those things. So, I can see why it would be good to introduce them to the country, but the only people who can afford them are people who would never buy a Chinese motorcycle anyway. :/

There is a golf course in Sharm, called Joli Ville, as well as a casino and some night clubs. I guess most of the American companies are either clothing brands or restaurants. There are a lot more in Cairo though, like Cinnabon (though I got REALLY sick there, so I don't know if I would suggest it or not, lol).

And about those darn toktoks! I watched "Ice Road Truckers" when they were in India (lol) and they had so many of those things on the road...and accidents left and right. Ohhhh after watching that I was hoping Egypt is nothing like that. I mean these people were ASKING for an accident. Ahhhhhhhhh!

lol, don't worry, there aren't many in Dahab or in Sharm. Come to think of it, I don't know if I ever saw a single one there! I'll have to work on my memory a bit, but I think that's right. We had a hard time even finding a cab in Dahab (we ended up in some guy's truck). In Sharm though, it's really easy to find a cab, and they're nicer than the ones in the Delta (in my opinion). Um... yes, they're so dangerous. Did you read my blog post where I talked about this time that I saw a toktok driver who had those suction cup plushies all over the windshield. They covered every centimeter of the glass, so that he actually had to lean his head out of the toktok just to see where he was going. I was like, "Yup, that's smart..." Neutral

The toktoks, while strange and annoying (to most drivers), can't go as fast as the motorcycles, so in that concern they're less dangerous, but still very dangerous. I've seen families piled in them like clown cars, with children si tting on the tiny bit of floor left on the edge, because there wasn't enough space to sit on the seat and the ceiling is too low to fit a larger child on the lap of their parent.

And if you think they're not going fast, look at the hijab pressing against the woman's chest. That wouldn't happen if they weren't going fast. Eek!!

This would make me so nervous just to watch them go by, I would be following the motorcycle in my toktok..

I know!! I didn't take this picture, I found it online, but it shows perfectly what I saw just about everytime we went out. It IS scary, because if they have an accident.... I've seen what happens to the adults. A small child wouldn't have a chance. You would think that this would be illegal in some way or other!!! I understand that people are poor and are just trying to survive, but I would rather stay at home, or walk really far, than to put my children's lives at stake...

Claire, I did read that blog post hahaha...crazy! Ohhhhh, thank goodness Sharm and Dahab are toktok free! Smile

And my heart would stop if I saw a family like that zooming by on a motorcycle. Those poor babies! affraid

Yeah, I just scrolled down the page and had a mini heart attack, and I'm the one who posted the picture!! I just forgot it was there, lol.
